Pet Microchipping

Microchipping

Microchipping is compulsory in NSW. All cats and dogs are required to be microchipped prior to being registered.

Animals are to be microchipped by 12 weeks of age, at a point of sale or change of ownership (whichever occurs first).

Microchipping is a painless procedure.  The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is usually implanted between the shoulders of the animal.

Microchipping can be carried out by a vet or by Council. Microchipping enables vets and Council to reunite pets with their owners. The microchip can be scanned to reveal all of the owners information supplied at the time of microchipping.

Free Microchipping Program

Council offers a free microchipping program that runs throughout the year.  Council's Ranger is an authorised implanter and is able to microchip your pet prior to registration under the free program. Contact Council on 03 58983000 to book this free service.

Once your pet is microchipped, you can then register your pet by using the NSW Pet Registry or in-person at Council’s Customer Service Centre.
