Lost and Impounded Pets

Stray or lost pets

If you find a lost dog or cat wearing a collar or tag with identification, try contacting its owner first.

If you cannot contact the owner, the right thing to do is to surrender the animal to the vet or council. This ensures the best effort can be made to determine the pet's ownership details in the shortest possible time by scanning for a microchip.

In most cases, Council is the first place concerned pet owners will contact if they have lost a pet, again reducing any time in reuniting pets with their owners.

You can contact us if you have a stray animal secured on your property, and a Ranger will come and collect the animal and take it to the Council Pound.

Impounded animals

You will need to make an appointment with Council’s Ranger to arrange the release of your animal from the Deniliquin Pound.

Please note that all impounded animals must be microchipped and registered before being released from the pound.

You will need to provide suitable identification such as a Driver’s License and any other appropriate documentation for your animal, such as a sterilisation certificate or microchipping form, and pay the required fees prior to the release of your animal.

Animals for adoption

Council endeavours to re-home all suitable unwanted cats and dogs from the Deniliquin Pound. We work with approved animal shelters to re-home all animals that come into our pound and are unclaimed.

If you find that you are unable to continue to care for your cat and dog, you should make all attempts to re-home the animal.
