Deniliquin, like many rural towns across the country, has faced significant challenges due to ongoing extreme weather events, changing customer shopping behaviours, and the rise of online shopping.

These factors have contributed to store closures and extended retail vacancies, impacting the heart of the local community.

In response, Edward River Council and Deniliquin Business Chamber have launched the Windows to our History Project. This collaborative initiative aims to enhance the vibrancy and attractiveness of Deniliquin's CBD, making it a more appealing retail option for locals and visitors.

The project will highlight some of Deniliquin's lesser-known historical figures and events through a series of stories illustrated by local artist Sivonne Binks.

These stories will be brought to life in six large, colourful window decals created by local signage and design business VisAttak. Featured stories include:

• Cyril Gove: His historic achievement of competing at a national level in three different sports on the same day.

• Aileen Dent: A celebrated artist known for her work in the Archibald Prize.

• Captain Melville: The daring tale of this dashing bushranger.

These eye-catching artworks will provide an entertaining glimpse into Deniliquin's history for all those passing by.

The first installations of the Windows to our History project will be at the shop facades of 44, and 46 Napier Streets and 259 Cressy Street. It is hoped that more landlords and retailers will come on board in 2025.

Special thanks go to the building’s owners and Ray White Real Estate for their cooperation in liaising with property owners and facilitating access for the installation of the window decals.

The decals will go up starting the week commencing 16 December.
